Red Jumper

Writer's picture: Stella LaRocheStella LaRoche

This was my first sewing project with a pattern. It was terrifying. There was so much I didn't understand and looking back, this was a complex pattern and project to start with.

As is often the case with my sewing projects, the main fabric used was a bedsheet, though the skirt lining was a floral fabric I'd had for ages, never knowing what to do with it. This garment was also my first piece of clothing to make its world debut at an event! I didn't make it specifically for the Dodie show I went to, it was finished just in time and the idea of wearing something I was really proud of to a show was incredibly alluring. Since then it's been a part of my normal wardrobe.

The zipper and hem are wonky, the back of the waist is unevenly cut, the straps are longer than they should be, and I wish I had made it truly reversible, but honestly I love it's imperfections and don't know that taking the time to "fix" them would be worth it.

The pockets in this skirt are truly magnificent, and because of how tightly the waistband/belt part is it feels very supportive--almost corset-like in it's structure (without boning though).

Materials:

-red bedsheet

-floral fabric of mysterious origin

-zipper
