Hoop Skirt and the Accompanying Petticoats

Writer's picture: Stella LaRocheStella LaRoche

In late October, I began working on the gown I was planning to wear for a Winter Ball I was hosting for a group of my friends. This project was heavily inspired by 1860's evening gown shapes and though all of the skirt parts were self patterned, the bodice pattern I used was a pattern for an 1860's style evening gown bodice.

The hoop skirt itself had a very chaotic creation, and as I have used it for try-ons, events, and photoshoots, it has been bent all sorts of ways to make it look the right shape to the human eye. This does mean it looks bonkers on its own, and sadly the photos I have right now don't show how evenly it comes across in real life.

Hoop materials:

-floral bedsheet

-straightened wire clothing hangers

-hat wire

-various ribbon

-a random bit of shiny string (closes

the waistband)

The floral petticoat was originally a mock up and way to make a pattern piece for the second petticoat. It is not pretty, but was a very useful step to get that pattern and in terms of layering, an extra layer in there is almost always a good idea.

Floral petticoat materials:

-floral sheet scraps

-snap

-hook & eye

The white petticoat is one of the pieces I've made that I'm most proud of, oddly enough. It's very neat, the seams are all straight, and the waistband is ingenious and blends in quite well.

-white bedsheet

-brown ribbon
